Well the ducks introduce Willie attackers there head coach today and here's a man who knows a thing or two about coach gene the organ ducks because he's good at it when he was here. Now ESPN Mike Bellotti long time no talk Ari coach. Are great public get well I did pretty again we're still here with all these years later. He's yeah yeah yeah write intelligently with OK so what do you know about Willie Taggart. You know I don't know that much although I got a call from Dick told me today who I respect a lot and he told me that he has worked out well indeed. Great guy does a tremendous job players. The only he worked for Jim Harbaugh and he has Tony Dungy seal the rule that's probably enough for me I know he's done more work less at western Kentucky. And at South Florida he's been willing to change his style of offense to sit the mold of the players he's got. And he's got a great reputation as a recruiter so it all sounds good to me I'm looking forward to get a chance you can sit down talk. Talk football and talk direction. So he yet he munition his recruiting skills is a good recruiter just a good recruiter and that translates no matter where they go Horry is Eugene. Different is it were is it direct recruiting T Jeanne as opposed to you know being in Florida. The way down yesterday recruiting you're good crew wherever you go a little tougher due June in his court because they're just not a local captive population of pac twelve division one football players within three or 400 mile radius I think you've got to go there is some of the Seattle W some of the Bay Area there's a lot more in LA. But they're not in orient initially not Eugene don't have a chance to come and seat. Campus in practice every day and make visits to the campus by just driving hole so. You've got to be a little bit better recruiter when it gets to be long district urging it be a better value later to know where to spend your time. Is that the biggest challenge that comes along with taken a job and organist is just that simply recruiting to a place like Eugene. Yeah I I think so I mean that there's not a huge minority population. Let's be honest good. You try to recruit minority people and but the facility obviously you were overwhelming their tremendous there's good news there are anywhere but you gotta get there and then you got to figure out how parents and Stanley are gonna get there as he gains until the you know cedar. Some play elbowed now almost every games on TV so the world a much smaller place but. I used to be great recruiter yet to create trust with the people that you're gonna take over and I'd leave their lives. You look at organ and it starts with with rich Brooks and that it transitions into you and you guys build something there. You build it into a top 25 program year in year out there's not many down years in fact in your entire time there was that one year you didn't go to a bowl game I think. I believe that's right yeah. So one and then you know of the of the stratosphere I guess the the you know. Is is there a danger that bit you're bit. You know for any program in the country I don't care if your Florida Florida State Alabama may be unrealistic to to think that that is the expectation. Well there's gonna be ups and downs was every program it's just it isn't in the programs like you know Alabama let's say your. I mean which you can't see Notre Dame anymore and you can't say it sees so I mean it it's hard. To look at programs say you're just gonna have a top ten or national. Championship caliber team every year there's just some tension this from occurring sometime gypsum devastating injuries. But. Unfortunately the trajectory of the war can program wasn't the right direction again when you're in the national championship two years removed from that. It's hard to believe that at Oregon they're gonna fire coach. And you know I know I have to people on that step and work would be they've been a long time and you don't become dump coaches overnight but unfortunately sometimes you don't make right decisions and recruit and you lose some of the key players. That you you may not have to people that come on in the program its show the same slot that would go before. This is a former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti with a here on the stand in a CSN. So as a coach. This it seems like an organ there's been the sort of sense of entitlement takeover not with. All players but with some enough to really affect that the progress of the program how would you go about if you're Willie Taggart. Sort of eradicating that. Well I'd put him in a different building I'd make him earn their way into. What adapt to Dowling complex. I put him in the bowels lots and stadiums like that because. They don't deserve right now and that's the only way yet understand I don't know about entitlement I I did you work a little bit as we got better and better facilities. I talk to the players about ticket that wasn't about the uniform sort of the equipment out of Sony needed win again. It's two guys on the field got to win the football game would never ever in the heart and the mind what they have to do. Keep that straight so you know like and I think. It's hard when you're there as part of it to do it it's probably easier when you come in fresh from the outside. Need to say hey guys we didn't do very well actually we didn't play as good as we need to we want to stop as we needed to be. We have to develop we have to earn some things and you know I had a chance to do you Google we will Virginia gave actually Virginia Oregon game to. And I talked Bronco Mendenhall will be got to Virginia date. Had a losing record losing treatment. Keep everybody current security earned their way into their right to go into the locker real you know things like that and I think I'm not saying that's necessary but I'm saying. It's one way to sort of make. People earn it and see who really want to do is going to work say. It doesn't matter who I want an article why was last year I've got to be a lot better this year I want this team to beat. Just the you know I remember being recruited their right around that time when some of those were just getting built and there was nothing like it on the West Coast I remember being recruited to Washington in UCLA and you know they're just weren't nice facilities in the pac twelve organ really stood alone. They were kind of ahead of the curve on that so just can you talk about that what. What did you have to go through in and was it significantly you you notice as you guys kind of got more than bells and whistles that more freely around at least West Coast college football the time. What impact that had on your team. Well yeah I can give you a quick overview is pretty yeah I I hate to go over in 95 draft to the most people. We went to the Cotton Bowl back to back news people games all night so what do you need to actually be indoor practice facility we built that a year later now we lost. Apple might step after the first yearbook coordinators left we left bank wedge to six and that we won 67891011. Consecutive years. And we rebuilt stadium week. Added the mug shots he's got an adult facility re did the training room redo the locker room and built the academics that are eventually. And as we did all those things we kept winning and getting better better than we hit a wall. And I think people plot and and we'd look at it's that some of the kids we recruited. Came in look and attitude of entitlement that age just like putting on that Jersey was gonna make them a better player they weren't gonna have to do the work necessary in the off season or the weight room work. Or compete on the field. Like they might want to. And so we dealt with it that we dealt at an incremental. Measures throughout my entire time thereby. By 2008. When I left in the 2009 class that I signed. I thought we had. Cleared another hurdle because we were about ready to build it didn't do football so. And I knew that was going to be another challenge but I thought we recruited great group of kids and we had a team. In that we started that streak together I think we went seven win jury went viral member in. In 2000 and don't ten wins in 2000 five's seven arrayed in the next year and then nine and then ten in the chip what Ted Turner maybe ten or eleven I don't remember that first year. But you know you you go through those a little bit of cycles which you've got to nip in the bud because it takes over your lock girl. It takes over some of the people you recruit. He can be a poison and I you know I don't know what that was the issue. With his team or not I really don't. I I just think that they were loose shorthanded on defense they've had. Three different coordinators in three years now whatever was four years and that's typical. You know what is your view of the defense I mean is it as simple as a way to settle shorthanded on defense or why were they so bad defensively. Well it. Did they weren't they weren't very good and big ticket actually got outmanned and apparently got out coached and it just was difficult and they had some injuries tonight I don't know. You know I don't I'm not aware enough of the personality or tell you specifically is they're good or bad in this area but. It was just difficult and that certainly did transitioned our idol unique talked a school record for three year. We're being forced to try to they're really matter. Still got to find eleven guys to compliant. And and play well. And unfortunately sometimes they're used was an advantage and sometimes they used was a disadvantage and and a problem but. They they weren't very good and unfortunately no one of the worst defense in the nation. And it was a factor because that year before they've outscored treat and this year they were looking younger on defense special operative line. And a quarterback. And they could not score. While most fans view that side of the ball is really the key so if your coach coming in T Eugene leg Willie Taggart how do you build. That side of the ball back up visitors simple does just hiring a great defensive coordinator like Taggart said today. Well yeah it's but it's not just that it's gets recruiting. And its findings of people and that it may be I don't know in this case changing the culture but. You know it may take a year to I'm just saying that. I don't know you can recruit a one year grip to get enough guys to create a kind of competition. Every day in practice Jergen need to put a great Egypt on the field but. You know what I'd certainly start with your staff. You know I think I heard Willie say talking about recruiting and staffing and to me giggle and and you you're. You're not gonna do one without yet you can't go recruit people who wanna know who's gonna coach you coach who's going to be the Decourt who's going to be live record can't choose to beat this show that. So he's got. His work cut out twelve in terms of meeting with. The current staff at Oregon meeting with seeing who's gonna follow him from South Florida who might take over some of the jobs there and then get those guys on the road now here's. Here's force of will his personality is certainly gonna help he's got a reputation as a recruiter. It's still not a nationally. And national brand name. So he's gonna have to go. You know because street hit the pavement which you well sounds like he wants to work and excited about it and I think it I think it's a good hire. The other one I wanted to ask you about is unique. You guys row is pretty innovative and in ahead of the curve you mentioned you know. You build the indoor practice facility and in all different things you guys were ahead of the curve on that when you offensively you guys re lit offensively some stuff nick was doing. You guys were ahead of the curve where start with Rhoden in and then obviously chipped in and that fast paced offense but. You look around the conference now everyone has sixty million dollar facilities. Everyone's running tempo everyone's running spread everyone's doing four or five different uniforms. And with the rise of washing USC is just harder than ever now to standout when it comes to recruiting or just been successful. Because everyone else is an Odyssey caught up at. Just feel like maybe did the rest of the field is in it's it's evened out a little bit as far as the innovation goes. Yeah I would say certainly would Washington and USC seemingly on the comeback trail and watched it is there because there are playoff. And SE navy right now the hottest team in the conference and one of the best teams. In the pac twelve minute it is difficult. But you know Oregon I think has some things with its relationship with Nike ad showing some things that. Can't be matched too many places to the the problem met such a beast or is right we work we were innovators we were Smart enough to stay ahead of the curve to change offenses to. Adapted and adjusted and even changed these coaches. And then to create some excitement with uniforms and facilities that we could capitalize on that week. Got the ball game's only one bowl games we won games are won championships and so. Those things were really important you can't have one. If you don't back it up on the other end. And now everybody we well new leader of an arms wee bit of the world and archer just to don't what would you consider the armed. You know in football it's its facilities. In its recruiting in its staff. And having you know a lot of missteps in console collapse thirty paid coaches on staff I mean we used to have here that was it total. And so we changed that and it it's change you were you have consultants and they are helping. Everybody you've got cut coaches or full time coaches and our going making a lot of BP consulted. And so it there's an arms race now that you don't see much from facility standpoint but it took personnel. It's an intelligence war. And a lot of lot of play a lot of programs out there have lot of people lots steps that you don't. Yeah how close or where you ever to coming back to the sideline. It close a couple times three or four times I mean I got offered jobs every year. After I left league Ichiro probably for the first five or six years and jobs pac twelve job this PC jobs. Big Ten jobs but I you know I I walked away because I was ready I had to be issues. I had some family issues I had some things that I needed to care about there is really liked football clubs and I you know people actually do in this coaching got a yeah every day every single day there's added data pure coach. There's not a day that goes by you'll think about coach stick about what you would do in the situation. Think about how to recruit how to call better play. But it is 8247365. Job and even more than that. In which the social media world now. It's just you know. I think who cheated I really meant I might go to white school or JC year's division three team and just say. And become honor and welcome in coach with tightening the quarterbacks to what you want I'll help you a little bit more we'll go from there. Now but that ESPN gigs pretty good gig Yankee GM filed. Well the easy all right. If you don't the good thing about ESP NS football is I get to talk about football. I don't lose many games I don't think I I don't have to make a cult mob after. Their son got injured orders and got kicked out to team because he's screwed up so yeah I hit it a lot better life it's a lot easier usual. You don't win many games that's silica you don't like. You miss the competition yet to yet to get that competition sort of a bug out on the golf course Shrek. Good tennis court golf tennis where can I got to ball dog today so good nice all right well thank you so much for a check him back in always did talk to you might think you. I guess.
